Research Components

Burkina Faso: Reduction of agriculture hotspots

Objectives

To reduce the contribution of agricultural irrigation (rice farming) in Anopheles proliferation.

Methodology

The following interventions will be implemented in rice fields:

  • Bio-efficacy tests

  • Intermittent irrigation of plots (IIP)

  • Alternate wet and dried irrigation systems (AWD)

Implementation

The study will be implemented in five rice plots, including one control site and four treatment sites where the above interventions will each be implemented. The fifth sites will use all three interventions to determine their joint performance for controlling mosquitoes in rice fields, while ensuring good rice production and efficient water use.

Continuous monitoring of larval productivity will be conducted in selected rice plots. Mosquito sampling will be performed twice per week throughout rice planting season.
